Why safety cages are essential

When operating large-scale machinery, particularly those powered by industrial robots, there is always the potential for unexpected malfunctions. These can be caused by programming errors or electrical faults, which may result in unpredictable machine behavior. Without proper safety precautions, such incidents could lead to significant injuries.

A safety cage, often called a safety fence, serves as a physical barrier that prevents operators and workers from entering the machine’s range. While the fence is not intended to stop the robot itself, its purpose is to ensure that people remain at a safe distance from the machinery.

How the safety system works

The safety cage is designed to keep people out of the reach of the robot. The cage is just one part of a broader safety protocol designed to protect workers. Two primary components work together to achieve this:

  • Safety fence locks: these locks are electronically linked to the machine’s operating system. If the fence is opened during machine operation, the system triggers an emergency stop, preventing workers from entering the area while the machine is active.
  • The safety box: this is a virtual boundary created by software. It ensures that the robot remains within predefined limits and prevents it from approaching the fence or endangering personnel nearby.

Compliance with international standards

This standard is part of the CE requirements for the electrical equipment of machines and is a crucial reference in our CE documentation.
